Overview
OVERVIEW
Climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing health systems today. Rising temperatures, extreme weather events, environmental degradation, and pollution are increasing the burden of disease while placing additional pressure on healthcare services. At the same time, healthcare systems contribute to environmental impacts through energy use, waste generation, water consumption, procurement, and greenhouse gas emissions.
This foundation module introduces learners to the relationship between climate change, the environment, and human health. It explores how climate change affects health in Kenya, the environmental footprint of healthcare, and Kenya's policy response through the Kenya Climate Change and Health Strategy (2024–2029) and the Kenya Green Health Guidelines.
Open specifically for students, graduates, and young professionals, this module provides the essential knowledge and practical understanding needed to begin a career in sustainable healthcare and climate-health practice.
This is the first module of the Green Health Essentials Training, and serves as the entry point to the Green Health Fellowship Program. Participants who complete the Green Health Essentials Training become eligible to apply for the Green Health Fellowship, which provides opportunities for mentorship, internships, attachments, research collaboration, leadership development, and professional placements with Niko Green partner institutions.
